How does the calculation work?

The formula is simple: divide the total meterage your pattern requires by the meterage per ball of your chosen yarn. The result is the minimum number of balls.

Always add a safety buffer of at least 10%. Yarn dye lots differ between production batches. If you run short and need a new ball, it may not match perfectly in colour.

For textured stitches like cables, moss stitch or ribbing, use a buffer of 15–20%. These stitches use significantly more yarn than stockinette.

Frequently asked questions

Check the total meterage your pattern requires, then divide by the meterage per ball of your chosen yarn. Always buy 10–15% extra for finishing and colour-lot safety.
The most important thing is to match the total meterage, not the number of balls. Calculate: pattern meterage ÷ meterage per ball of your new yarn = number of balls needed.
A typical adult sweater requires 800–1200 metres in DK weight or 600–900 metres in Aran/worsted weight. Always check the pattern for the exact amount.
A standard adult hat requires approximately 150–200 metres in DK weight or 100–150 metres in Aran weight.
Dye lots differ between batches. If you run out mid-project, the new ball may not match perfectly. Buy 10–15% extra to be safe.
